Painting

At first glance, my works appear to be color field painting. Yet it quickly becomes evident that something more unfolds for the viewer: the compositions of distinct areas can be recognized as abstract “portraits” — roughly resolved images situated between representation and interpretation.

Despite their formal finesse, however, the images only allow us to recognize people as such. The paintings leave unanswered everything that lies beyond the code of their color fields, compelling the viewer to interpret, to come close, to step back, to squint — and ultimately to reconcile with a mystery between image and hunch.

The more distance the viewer allows, the further they move away from the work, the less can be discerned — and the more space opens up for interpretation; almost, it seems, what eludes close inspection becomes visible. The technique of the works reinforces this quality: what at first glance appears to be large-scale prints reveals itself, upon closer inspection, as hand-painted acrylic. Thus, the duet between viewer and work ultimately becomes a parable of human relations — of the visible and the hidden, of the longing to recognize the other, and of all the efforts this entails.
